Cost of Study summarizes the average cost of study for different courses and programs in Australia for different levels of study. It also shows the price differences between universities, colleges and TAFE.



The cost of studying in Australia is generally very reasonable compared to other countries in the world such as the United States. The cost of tuition varies between the type of education institution, as well as by the course you'd like to study.

Bachelor or Master Degrees:

The average costs for a Bachelor or Masters degree per year is:

  • AUD 15,000 to AUD 20,000 at most Universities
  • AUD 25,000 to AUD 35,000 at high-ranked, private or prestigious Universities
  • AUD 10,000 to AUD 15,000 at colleges, which are smaller than Universities

Diploma and Advanced Diploma:

The average costs for a diploma or advanced diploma per year is:

  • AUD 10,000 to AUD 15,000 per year for a diploma
  • AUD 15,000 to AUD 20,000 per year for an advanced diploma at a college
  • AUD 17,500 to AUD 22,500 per year for an advanced diploma at a University

Field of Study

The field of study you choose will affect the costs of your study in Australia. Generally, degrees such as art, business, commerce, education and nursing cost the least. Degrees that are more highly specialised such as science and engineering are more expensive. Medical degrees and dentistry can cost from AUD 40,000 to AUD 250,00 a year dependent on your institution. If you're looking for a vocational course, you can expect to pay far less than a University course.

Pathway Courses to University Bachelor Degrees

If you don't have the academic requirements to go straight into a Bachelor degree, don't worry, there are plenty of other options. Pre-university courses (called pathway courses) are an excellent option to get you started studying in Australia.

The average costs for pathway courses per year is:

  • AUD 15,000 to AUD 20,000 for a pathway course at a University
  • AUD 15,000 to AUD 20,000 for a Diploma or Cert IV course which are sometimes required for international students before getting into a Bachelor degree program and are conducted at University partner institutions.

TAFE - for Vocational and Shorter Degrees

TAFE in Australia is a number of institutions that welcome international students to their vocational courses. Students can study a number of courses there, including training degrees, diploma degrees and short courses such as cooking and hairdressing. You can expect to pay around AUD 10,000 a year for a diploma or advance diploma at TAFE and around AUD 10,000 to AUD 15,000 a year for a Bachelor degree.
